Summer Heat and ATG Readings: What Gas Station Owners Need to Know

When temperatures climb, gas station owners often notice something else rising: confusion around fuel inventory. 

Your automatic tank gauge, or ATG, may show changes that do not appear to match fuel sales, delivery records, or expected tank levels. A morning reading might differ from an afternoon reading, and a delivery can introduce an even larger shift. 

That does not automatically mean fuel is missing. 

Temperature affects the physical volume of gasoline and diesel. Understanding that relationship—and reviewing ATG readings alongside sales, deliveries, and temperature data—can help operators separate normal movement from actual fuel loss. 

Why Heat Can Change Fuel Inventory Readings 

Petroleum products expand as they warm and contract as they cool. The mass of the fuel does not change, but the amount of physical space it occupies can. 

Although underground storage tanks are insulated from rapid changes in outside air temperature, the temperature of the fuel inside them can still vary. Important factors include: 

  • The temperature of a newly delivered load 
  • Seasonal changes in ground temperature 
  • Fuel turnover and sales volume 
  • The time of day a reading is taken 
  • Differences between delivered fuel temperature and existing tank temperature 

For example, a warmer fuel delivery entering a cooler underground tank may gradually change temperature after it is dropped. As the new and existing fuel equalize, the ATG’s observed volume can shift—even when no product has been sold or lost. 

This is one reason gas station owners should avoid evaluating a single ATG reading in isolation. 

Understanding Gross and Temperature-Compensated Volume 

Depending on your ATG configuration, you may see both observed—or gross—volume and temperature-compensated volume. 

Observed volume represents the physical amount of space the fuel occupies at its current temperature. Temperature-compensated volume estimates what that inventory would represent at a standard reference temperature. 

Modern ATG systems may use temperature-compensation algorithms to provide a clearer and more consistent inventory picture as product temperature changes. (⁠Veeder Docs

However, temperature compensation should not be treated as a substitute for complete fuel reconciliation. Owners still need to compare: 

  • ATG opening and closing inventory 
  • POS fuel sales 
  • Fuel delivery documentation 
  • Pump totalizers 
  • Water levels 
  • Recorded adjustments 
  • Fuel variance trends 

A number on the tank gauge is most useful when it is connected to the rest of your operation. 

Why Consistent Reading Times Matter 

Comparing readings taken under different operating conditions can create misleading variances. 

A reading taken before opening is not directly comparable to one taken during a delivery, immediately after a delivery, or during a busy afternoon. Fuel may still be moving through the lines, settling in the tank, or changing temperature. 

For more reliable comparisons: 

  1. Take or request readings at approximately the same time each day. 
  2. Avoid taking control readings during a fuel delivery. 
  3. Allow fuel to settle after a delivery before relying on the reading. 
  4. Confirm that all sales and deliveries are included in the same reporting period. 
  5. Review trends over several days rather than reacting to one unusual result. 

The EPA recognizes automatic tank gauging as one of several internal release-detection methods, but the equipment must be operated, maintained, and reviewed correctly. (⁠US EPA

When an ATG Variance Deserves Attention 

Heat can help explain normal inventory movement, but it should never be used to dismiss every shortage. 

Investigate when you see: 

  • A variance that continues in the same direction 
  • Repeated shortages beyond your established tolerance 
  • Unexpected water readings 
  • Sudden probe or sensor changes 
  • Differences between ATG data and delivery documents 
  • Missing POS fuel sales 
  • Unexplained manual adjustments 
  • ATG alarms or failed leak tests 

A persistent discrepancy may point to a delivery-entry error, POS communication issue, calibration problem, meter issue, theft, probe malfunction, or possible release. 

Federal rules require regulated underground tanks and piping to have appropriate release detection so leaks can be identified before contamination spreads. State and local requirements may be more stringent, so operators should follow their implementing agency’s rules and retain the required records. (⁠US EPA
