Foodservice Is Now 38.9% of C-Store Inside Profit. Is Your Multi-Store Back Office Keeping Up?

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Convenience retail just posted its 23rd straight year of in-store sales growth. NACS reports that U.S. in-store sales reached $341.2 billion in 2025, up 1.7%. For operators running 10, 40 or 100 stores, the opportunity is real. But growth across many locations brings its own problem: every new store adds another set of numbers you have to trust.

Petrosoft operates 22 gas stations of our own, so we have felt the jump from I can see every store to I need a system that sees every store for me. That system is CStoreOffice®, connected to SmartPOS, QwickServe, Retail360 and Eagle Eye. Heres what the 2026 data says multi-site operators should prioritize.

Foodservice is where the profit is moving

The NACS State of the Industry numbers are hard to ignore:

  • Foodservice accounted for 28.5% of in-store sales in 2025, up from 11.9% in 2005.
  • Foodservice generated 38.9% of in-store gross profit.
  • Prepared food made up 73.9% of foodservice sales, up from 66.4% in 2021.

In other words, the kitchen is becoming the profit engine of the modern c-store. Food, though, is also the hardest category to control: waste, recipe costing, order accuracy and speed all hit the bottom line. Across 20 or more stores, small inconsistencies add up to big money.

How Petrosoft helps: QwickServe self-order kiosks and kitchen display screens send every food order straight to the kitchen and every sale straight into CStoreOffice®, so you can compare food sales and margin across every location in one report.

Fewer trips mean every visit has to count

NACS also reports that transactions fell 2.7% to 45,160 per store per month, while the average store employs 19.9 people and card fees reached a record $21.3 billion. Chains cannot simply count on more traffic. They need a bigger basket, a faster line and tighter labor at every location.

How Petrosoft helps: SmartPOS and QwickServe kiosks keep lines moving at peak hours, while CStoreOffice® centralized price books let you push a promotion to every store at once. Retail360 shows district managers which stores are winning and which need help today.

Fraud is scaling with you

The NRF and Loss Prevention Research Councils Impact of Retail Theft & Violence 2026 report found that shoplifting fell 12.4% in 2025, but other schemes grew:

  • 51% of retailers reported more loyalty fraud.
  • 42% reported more gift card theft or fraud.
  • 40% reported more organized retail crime (ORC) incidents.
  • 61% are investing in risk-intelligence technology.

If you have launched a loyalty program or sell gift cards across a growing network, these numbers apply to you.

How Petrosoft helps: Eagle Eye ties video to SmartPOS transactions across every site, and CStoreOffice® cash and shift controls show which stores have the most voids, refunds and shortages, so your loss-prevention team knows exactly where to look.

The connected multi-store stack

CStoreOffice®: one source of truth across every location

CStoreOffice® gives multi-site operators centralized pricing and price-book control, wholesale EDI purchasing, cash and shift controls, and a full accounting ledger. Instead of collecting reports from managers, you compare every store side by side in one cloud dashboard.

QwickServe: faster food lines, cleaner orders

QwickServe is our self-order kiosk and kitchen display system (KDS). Customers build their own orders and the kitchen sees them instantly. That means fewer mistakes, shorter lines at lunch and food sales that flow directly into your back office.

Retail360: run the chain from your phone

Retail360 puts store performance and fuel forecasting in a mobile app, so district managers and owners can act between store visits instead of after them.

Eagle Eye: loss prevention that scales

Eagle Eye links camera footage to POS transactions, helping your team quickly investigate exceptions such as voids, refunds and suspicious activity across every site.

Five questions every multi-site operator should ask in 2026

  1. Can I compare food margin and waste store by store, by day?
  2. Can I change a price once and have it reach every store correctly?
  3. Do I know which locations have the highest voids, refunds and shortages?
  4. Are vendor invoices and EDI purchases reconciled automatically?
  5. Can my district managers see problems before they visit the store?

If any answer is not really your back office is limiting your growth. CStoreOffice® answers all five in one cloud dashboard, with QwickServe covering the kitchen, Eagle Eye covering exceptions and Retail360 putting it all on your district managers phones.
